How to make a Cathedral Length Veil
When little girls play dress-up as a bride, they always pretend with a veil. It’s the most recognizable wedding garment. Even though it can be a variety of lengths and styles, the most romantic and beautiful ones are very long. It just so happens that long veils are in style right now!
If you head to your local bridal shop, you will find a hefty price tag on many of these. Another option is to search the internet. This can be risky, since you don’t always know the quality of the item you’ll receive.
However, making it yourself should be a realistic option. You don’t even need a sewing machine! If you’ve got a needle and thread, you can do this!
Materials you need:
soft tulle
hair comb
needle
thread
lace/trim optional
First, decide how long you want your veil. It can be any length you want. Measure from the top of your head to the desired length. This is the amount of tulle you should purchase from the fabric store.
If you want to add a detailed edge like lace or trim, you need to purchase enough to go around 3 sides of your tulle.
Fold your tulle in half long ways and cut the outside corners into a curve so that when it’s being worn it will look nice. Your fold will ensure that it’s symmetrical.
Now is the time to sew on your lace edge or trim. I do this with a needle and thread by hand. If you use a sewing machine, it’s likely to bunch and not lay smooth. You can make yourself comfortable on the couch with a movie to do this!
Once your lace is on, gather the top edge of the tulle with your needle and thread. Make some easy wide stitches so that you can pull the thread easily to gather up the tulle to fit the width of the hair comb. I used a double thread so it didn’t break.
Stitch the tulle to the comb. Use a double thread. Go over the stitches twice so that it’s totally secure.
That’s it! Try on your veil! It really is that easy.
