Budget Friendly Natural Leaf Garland
Budget Friendly Natural Fall Leaf Garland
By Kathleen Leonard
I love making all the things for fall, but my budget doesn’t always agree with me! I get all these ideas going in my head about what I’d like to do outside, inside, and up the stairway, but with a big family, that’s not always realistic.
I’ve always been a believer in “use what you have” when it comes to making things. That definitely applies to holiday décor. This fall I wanted a leaf garland to hang in my shop windows. I was going to use the ones from the Dollar Tree, but they can look so skimpy. Also, this year, things seem to be harder to get in the stores, so my Dollar Tree didn’t even have any left by the time I went to get some.
I thought about making some out of fall scrapbook paper. My son didn’t think that would look so hot. He just didn’t think it would have the right look I wanted. He suggested real looking leaves. Well I have a whole yard of those! So I figured out a way to make a beautiful leaf garland from the leaves lying on the ground. Talk about eco friendly too! Plus, as a bonus, my two youngest got involved hunting up the best looking ones. There’s nothing like spending a little time outside in the sun with the kids!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Floral wire
cutters
Lots of leaves
I grabbed a spool of green floral wire that I’ve had for literally years.
I started out by laying three leaves on top of each other to get a nice base.
I wrapped the wire around the stems 4 times, but left a small tail of wire (don’t cut the other end of the wire just keep the spool dangling and unwind as you need)
Then I placed another leaf just a little lower on the bunch and wrapped the wire around it once.
Grabbed another leaf and did the same thing, placed it lower than the last and wrapped the wire once around, making sure I was pulling a bit tight to keep it together.
I continued this until I got to the length I wanted (approx 10 feet)
I actually made two of these since I have two front windows at the shop. I think this is probable the best thing I ever made because I got my materials from my yard and I spent $0 dollars on this craft!
I hope you look around at your yard or craft stash and find some things that you can use to whip us something awesome.
