DIY Old Fashioned Valentine’s

One of first crafts I remember making with my mom was home made Valentine’s for my family. I’m not sure how old I was, maybe 5 or 6 years old. It was so fun because we made them out of shiny red poster paper. What little girl doesn’t love shiny things?

Another reason it was so fun was that my sister and I got to search through Mom’s craft stash for things to use. Digging through drawers that were normally “off limits” was like a treasure hunt. We found lots of bits of lace and things to decorate our Valentine’s with.

Once we were ready to go, out came the Elmer’s glue and scissors. We worked on them at the living room end table right by Mom’s rocker so she could help us. I wish I could go back in time for a glimpse, but the good thing is that I remember them plane as day so I can make them with my daughter. If you decide to make them you will need the following:

  • Shiny red card stock (I bought mine on Amazon) I’ll post the link at the end

  • A heart that you can trace or else make your own pattern

  • Lace, hearts, stickers, beads, anything you have that goes with the season. It can be things you already own or found at the dollar stores

  • Hot glue or tacky glue

  • Scissors

  • White card stock

This pack has 10 sheets in it so you’ll have plenty to work with.

I traced the outside of the glitter heart that I bought at Dollar Tree onto the white side of the shiny paper. Then I cut out several to work with.

One of the unique features of our Valentine’s are the accordions that give sections a 3-D effect. I cut two strips of white paper approximately 1/2” by 6”

Put a drop of glue or hot glue on the one end to make a V. Let it dry for a minute.

Fold one end over the other. Keep going back and forth from opposite pieces until you run out of paper. Press each fold with your finger to give it a nice crease. Eventually you will have an accordion spring.

For this one, I cut a smaller heart using the inside of the glitter heart I originally traced. You can use your own patterns. Then I made 3 accordions to use to “pop” it up 3-D. I just used hot glue.

I made another layer of accordions with a pink and a red heart from the same pack as the red. Then I used some old lace from my stash to hot glue around the edge of the bottom heart.

It’s all finished. It gets a little tricky going around the corners of the heart. Just ease it into the curve, Be careful not to burn yourself.
